Pittsburgh's own Remarkable Trees program has not published an age for any of the four trees it named in March 2023. The closest it comes to a superlative is the bald cypress in Mellon Park, named the largest of its kind on public land anywhere in the city. No height or girth was published alongside that title.
The city's Shade Tree Commission, working with Tree Pittsburgh, opened an official call for Remarkable Trees in 2023 and took 44 nominations from residents; 15 met the criteria and became the program's first list, recorded in the commission's own March 2023 meeting minutes. Three from that first list stand together in Mellon Park, the city's first public arboretum: a bald cypress named the largest of its kind on Pittsburgh's public land, a katsura honoured as a Tree of a Kind for its caramel-smelling autumn leaves, and a lacebark pine named for its peeling, patchwork bark. A fourth, a white oak in Phillips Park, carries the program's Giving Tree title, awarded for what a tree provides to the wildlife around it rather than for its size. None of the four has a published age, height or girth; the program measured them by kind of remarkableness rather than by number. Only one source names the Phillips Park oak, the commission's own minutes, so its exact spot inside the park and its story beyond the citation are still open questions a reader on the ground could answer faster than any register.
