Qual è l'albero più antico di Mexico City?

The oldest tree in Mexico City is El Viejo del Agua, the ahuehuete of Santa Catarina in Azcapotzalco, which the city estimates at around 700 years, with a trunk 13.8 metres around. Treat that number as the city's own figure rather than a measured age: SEDEMA repeats it without publishing how it was reached, which is why we give it as a band of 500 to 700 years on the tree's own page.

Ahuehuete means old man of the water, and the Montezuma cypress is the tree the Aztecs planted beside springs and canals, which is why the survivors sit where water once ran rather than where the city grew. Almost none of them carries a documented age. The register that finally named them, SEDEMA's Arboles Patrimoniales declaration of 2025, measures trunks rather than years, so five of the nine trees on this page have no recorded age at all and we say so rather than filling the gap. The exception is the ahuehuete in Parque Espana, planted on 21 September 1921, a date precise to the day, which makes it the one fixed reference point on the page for how fast these trees actually thicken. Two famous ages circulate here and neither survives checking: the Xochimilco sabino is said locally to have been planted by Cuauhtemoc in 1521, and El Viejo del Agua is repeatedly called 700 years old. Both are traditions rather than measurements. The trunks, on the other hand, were measured this decade, and they are extraordinary.
