The Sausage Tree of City Hall Memorial Garden
This tree is on Hong Kong's register of old and valuable trees without being big. It is 14 metres tall, with a trunk 85 centimetres across, a fraction of the banyans in Hong Kong Park. What it has instead is rarity: a sausage tree, a species the register seldom holds, growing in the garden beside City Hall a few steps from the Star Ferry pier. The name is the description. Its flowers hang below the branches on long stalks, like lamps on cords, and the fruit that follows is long enough to explain the English name without help. Those dangling stalks are the quickest way to pick it out among the other trees in the garden. Its crown is 16 metres wide, wider than the tree is tall. The City Hall Memorial Garden is on Edinburgh Place in Central, a public garden run by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, and the Star Ferry's Central pier is next to the square. The tree was inspected and recorded alive in July 2026. Nobody has put an age on it, or recorded when a sausage tree was planted beside City Hall. If you know, tell us.
