Both call it a candidate for the city's oldest living thing rather than stating it outright, because nobody has surveyed every old tree in Minneapolis to settle the claim. What makes the age plausible is the species: bur oak is the tree of the prairie edge, with bark thick enough to survive the fires that once ran through Minnesota's oak savanna every few years, which is why the region's oldest trees tend to be bur oaks rather than something thinner-barked. This one had already been growing for a century before Fort Snelling was built downstream, and it carries burls, the lumpy growths that mark a long history on a trunk. It sits off the trail on the western shore of Wirth Lake and takes some looking to find.
