The Furmanska lipa, or Carter's Linden, standing on Borstnikov trg in front of the inn Gostilna Pod lipo, carries the strongest documented claim to being Ljubljana's oldest tree: planted in 1626 and named by researchers Miran Satler and France Stele in their study of old Slovenian lindens, it already appears, roughly 118 years old, on Florijancic's 1744 map of the city, and turns exactly 400 in 2026. Its nearest rival by documentation, rather than by age, is the Marmontova lipa in Ljubljana's Botanical Garden, planted in 1810, the same year the garden itself was founded, and named for Auguste de Marmont, the French marshal who governed Ljubljana during Napoleon's brief Illyrian Provinces period; at roughly 216 years old, it is a full 184 years younger than the Carter's Linden. Both trees are individually documented by name and planting year, a level of certainty the city's other two entries, a pair of plane trees on Streliska ulica dated only by their shared appearance on the same 1744 map, do not quite match. The gap between the two lindens is real and not close.
