The sequoia's age comes from its original planting date at the Pittenger family home around 1912, recorded in the Idaho Big Tree Program's champion register at its old address before a hospital expansion forced the 2017 move. Family history says the seedling arrived from California by way of the naturalist John Muir, a story repeated for a century and resting on the family's own telling rather than any document, kept here as the story the tree arrived with rather than a fact. Moving a hundred-year-old sequoia was a gamble; the arborists on the job put its remaining span at three to five more centuries if the roots took hold, and nine years on it is thriving in a public park. Two other champions in Julia Davis Park, a bur oak and a Kentucky coffeetree, are each the largest of their species recorded in Idaho, but the state's register measures size rather than years and gives no age for either. The fourth tree, a young horse chestnut grafted from the Amsterdam tree Anne Frank watched from the annex window, is only about a decade old, the newest planting on this list by far, at the city's own Anne Frank memorial downtown.
