Yews are Europe's slowest-aging trees by reputation, individual specimens in churchyards across the continent routinely claimed to be a thousand years old or more, sometimes credibly. Trsteno's own yew makes no such claim: its planting is recorded precisely, 1859, part of the same run of 19th-century plantings that gave the arboretum its ginkgos and cedar, and at around 167 years it is a comparative youngster next to its species' most famous specimens. What it demonstrates instead is how the arboretum itself has worked for nearly six centuries: founded in the 1490s by the Gucetic-Gozze family as a Renaissance summer garden, expanded across generations with whatever species each era's owners could get their hands on, from Mediterranean natives to exotic imports arriving by ship. The yew belongs to the second big wave of that expansion, the 19th-century collecting push that also planted the arboretum's ginkgos and its Lebanon cedar within a few years of each other. It stands as a quieter, darker counterpoint to Trsteno's famous sunlit plane trees at the village gate outside, evergreen where they turn deciduous, patient where they grew fast, part of the same six centuries of continuous cultivation on one stretch of Adriatic coastline.

The pin marks the right spot roughly, not the tree itself. It stands here, but we have not confirmed the precise position on the ground yet. Know exactly where it is?
