Welcher ist der älteste Baum in Žilina?

The oldest tree in Žilina is the London plane standing at the southwestern corner of Budatín Castle's wall, about 270 years old, 603 centimetres round and 27 metres tall. It went into the ground in 1745, when Count Ján Sunyog brought a gardener named František Roder over from Silesia to lay out the grounds around the castle, a rare case of a tree this old with a documented planting date attached. It won Strom roka, Slovakia's national tree of the year vote, in 2016, and placed ninth of sixteen at the European Tree of the Year contest the following year. It grows beside a second, unhealthier plane whose roots have grown into its own, struck by lightning and colonised by a wood-rotting fungus.

Budatín Park lies where the Kysuca river runs into the Vah, on the northern edge of Žilina, open public ground with no ticket needed, a short walk or local bus ride from Žilina railway station, which makes the plane tree the easiest of the three to combine with an ordinary visit to the city. Two more protected trees stand within 1.5 kilometres: a pair of small-leaved limes on Kysucká cesta with no recorded age, cared for by the Malá Fatra National Park administration and fitted with support cables in 2022, and a maple on Sokolovská ulica whose species two independent sources disagree on, sugar maple by the national register, silver maple by Slovak Wikipedia's own protected-tree list. All three are free, on public ground, and walkable as one afternoon rather than three separate trips. Žilina itself is Slovakia's fourth-largest city, with an ordinary city centre, shops and a station, none of which the trees ask anything of you beyond a short walk between them. Start at the castle and plane tree, work outward to the two street trees, and you have covered the whole of what the national register protects here in one loop.
