Welcher ist der älteste Baum in Venice?

Venice has no single, individually dated oldest tree the way some cities do. Its best-documented old plantings are the trees of the Giardini della Biennale (the Napoleonic Gardens) in Castello, laid out by Giannantonio Selva for the garden's 1810 opening, which makes some of its lindens, hackberries and plane trees up to around 216 years old, though no individual specimen there has been separately measured or aged.

Ring counts and growth-based estimates work poorly in Venice's own record because almost nothing here has been measured the way a monumental tree in Milan or Rome has. What the city does have is documented planting and construction dates for the gardens themselves: the Giardini della Biennale (Castello) laid out in 1810, the cemetery island of San Michele completed in 1813, San Lazzaro degli Armeni's monastery garden begun in 1717. Those dates set an upper bound on how old any tree standing there today could be, but they are not proof that any single tree dates back that far, since replanting is common and mostly undocumented. That gap between a garden's founding date and an individual tree's real age is stated honestly across every entry on this list rather than smoothed into a false precision. The Giardini della Biennale is reachable on foot from the Giardini vaporetto stop (lines 1, 4.1, 4.2), a few minutes from the Biennale's own entrance on Riva dei Sette Martiri.
