Welcher ist der älteste Baum in Utrecht?

Utrecht's oldest tree is the Uithof Linden, a common lime planted around 1750 beside a 17th-century farmhouse that gave its name to what is now Utrecht Science Park. At roughly 275 years old, it predates the university campus built up around it by two centuries, one of the oldest Dutch lindens still standing anywhere.

Utrecht keeps its oldest trees in two very different settings, and the contrast says something about how a Dutch city actually preserves age. The Uithof Linden and the Oude Hortus's three specimens all survive because they sat inside a boundary somebody drew and then defended: a farmhouse's private dooryard in one case, a university garden's walls in the other, both places where nobody had reason to fell an inconvenient tree for centuries. The Nieuwegracht's canal lindens took the opposite route, out in the open on a public street since the 1600s, which is also why they are honestly the youngest of the five: street trees get replaced when they die or block a view, and at least one full replanting happened there sometime between the original 1660 planting scheme and the roughly 1830-dated lime trees standing today. Between the walled survivors and the replanted street trees sits the real explanation for why this city's canal-lined image and its handful of genuinely centuries-old specimens rarely overlap on the same tree.
