Waligóra is fatter higher up than at the base, 620 centimetres round at 1.3 metres against 527 at ground level, which is not how a single trunk normally grows. The likeliest explanation is that at least two young pines grew together low down and fused, with the combined mass then forking at about two metres into eight bent limbs, now held together with steel cables. That shape, rather than age, is what makes it so thick: at only about 160 to 170 years old it is younger than its bulk suggests. It has been protected since December 1982, reconfirmed by the voivode in 2006. An 18-stop educational trail called Do Waligóry has run 3.4 kilometres out to the tree since 1998, with a parking area just off national road 32. Its neighbour Rzepicha, five trunks fused into one crown, measures 568 centimetres round and is the country's thickest Scots pine under current measuring rules, having taken the title from Waligóra when the method changed rather than by growing past it. No age has been published for Rzepicha anywhere found, and it has no trail or parking, only a walk off-path through wet ground. If you know its age, tell us.
