Welcher ist der älteste Baum in Stockholm?

Stockholm's oldest tree is generally considered Birger Jarl's Oak, on a traffic island at the Kristineberg motorway interchange on Kungsholmen, estimated at roughly 800 years old, as old as the city itself. Its trunk is more than two metres across, among the nine thickest oaks recorded in Stockholm.

Birger Jarl is traditionally credited with founding Stockholm around 1252, and this oak on Kungsholmen has been growing for nearly as long, its age estimated at roughly 800 years from trunk measurements the city has taken over the decades. Nobody claims Birger Jarl planted it; the name marks that its age roughly matches the city's own rather than any documented planting event. What makes the tree unusual today is less its age than its setting: when engineers built the Essingeleden motorway and its Kristineberg interchange, they routed the roads around this single oak rather than through it, leaving it standing on a traffic island about ten metres from six lanes of moving traffic. City surveys give it the same protection status as a nature reserve and rank its trunk, more than two metres across, among Stockholm's nine thickest recorded oaks. It is not a tree to walk up to or picnic beneath; it is visible from nearby Kungsholmen streets and from the interchange itself, a genuinely ancient survivor the city chose to build around rather than remove, in a spot no one would ever have chosen for a tree on purpose.
