Monterey's oldest mapped tree, by best estimate, is the Lone Cypress, thought to be 200 to 300 years old. It grows alone on a bare granite outcrop on the 17-Mile Drive above Carmel Bay, exactly as its name says.
Nobody has cored the Lone Cypress, and nobody will: coring a tree already fighting for root space in bare rock would be reckless. The estimate of 200 to 300 years comes from its size and growth rate rather than a ring count, and it is the figure the Pebble Beach Company and local naturalists both use. It has grown that long on a wind-scoured granite headland on the 17-Mile Drive, roots wedged into rock cracks rather than soil, which is also why it stayed small: exposure, not age, has kept it low and gnarled rather than tall. The company that owns the headland registered a drawing of the tree as a trademark in 1919 and has defended it in court since. It is fenced and cabled for support, and it remains the most photographed tree on the California coast. Two more trees now join it on this page, the cliffside cypress of Point Lobos and the Moon-seed redwood of Friendly Plaza; neither challenges the Lone Cypress's age.
