Within that combined pool, the cypress of San Juan de la Cruz at Carmen de los Martires is the one most precisely dated, on the strength of a documented six-year residency (1582-1588) by the Carmelite mystic, rather than a vaguer estimate. Some popular sources round the tree's age up to 500 years; this site uses the more conservative, better-documented figure tied to San Juan de la Cruz's own recorded time at the convent, itself older than the Generalife's own sequoias or the botanical garden's ginkgo, both 19th century plantings by comparison.
