The Field Maple of Kaerholmen

Copenhagen has two field maples worth crossing town for, and the register tells them apart by numbering, filing this one as Navr 2. It is the taller of the pair and the slimmer, 3.60 metres round and 15.5 metres high, against 4.03 metres and 12 metres for the maple in Hans Tavsens Park. It stands on its own in Grøndalsparken, facing the building at Kærholmen, and it branches from about a metre up, so what you get above head height is several heavy limbs rather than one continuing trunk. A solitary field maple is the interesting part. Acer campestre spends most of its life in Denmark as hedge material, cut back every few years and never allowed to become anything; this one was left alone long enough to turn into a tree, in a park that runs as a green strip along the railway. The register recorded it as alive and healthy when the position was checked in November 2019, and the register is the only source that carries it. Nobody else has written it up, nobody has dated it, and no age is offered here because none can be honestly derived.
